Reduce Tooth Staining by Steeping Tea in Tea Bags or Tea Filter Paper

Some of the more sophisticated tea drinkers out there probably brew their cup of tea using loose tea leaves, but you may not be aware that there is actually a big difference in the amount of tooth-staining molecules released when brewing tea with loose tea leaves versus bagged tea.

Brew Tea Leaves using Tea Filters to Decrease Staining

Tea that is steeped in bags or in paper tea filters will release fewer staining molecules because many will be absorbed by the paper of the bag or filter itself. This reduction in staining moleucles is most pronounced with green teas because the brewing temperature is not as high as with black teas. In fact, tooth staining molecules can be reduced by about 50% by using tea filter paper when brewing green teas. With black teas, steeping in bags will still reduce the quantity of staining molcules, but the difference is much less dramatic.
Although brewing tea with loose tea leaves can be delicious with particular teas, steeping your tea in bags or placing the tea leaves into paper tea filters will help you limit staining if you are concerned with stained teeth.
