How to Handle Orthodontic Emergencies on Vacation
Vacations are meant for relaxation, not unexpected emergencies. But when you or your child experiences an orthodontic emergency while away from home, knowing how to respond can make all the difference. In this blog, we’ll explain exactly how to handle orthodontic emergencies on vacation—so you can stay calm, act quickly, and get back to making memories.
Whether you’re poolside in Florida or hiking in the mountains, orthodontic issues can pop up unexpectedly. The good news? Most problems can be managed until you’re back home. Here’s what to know, what to look for, and how to get help when you need it.
What Constitutes an Orthodontic Emergency?
An orthodontic emergency is any situation involving your braces or aligners that causes significant discomfort, trauma, or health risk. If you’re unsure whether something qualifies, here are a few red flags:
- Significant trauma – If your mouth has suffered a blow (for example, during a sports activity or a fall) and there’s visible injury to the teeth, jaw, or face, seek emergency care. This could mean broken teeth, heavy bleeding, puncture wounds, and facial swelling that extends beyond your braces. Even if someone is not in active treatment, an orthodontist often needs to be involved after significant dental trauma to help stabilize the teeth.
- Extreme pain – Everyone experiences and perceives pain differently, but it is rare to experience unbearable discomfort with braces and especially rare with aligners. Gentle movements move teeth more quickly so we utilize the latest braces and clear aligner technology to deliver low forces and greater comfort. If you’re experiencing intense, unrelenting pain that isn’t relieved by over-the-counter medication, it’s time to act.
What Constitutes a Minor Orthodontic Emergency?
Not every mishap requires urgent care. Many common orthodontic concerns can wait until you’re home—but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. These are minor issues that you can often manage temporarily with simple tools or techniques:
- Loose or broken bracket – If a bracket comes loose from a tooth but is still attached to the wire, you can use orthodontic wax to hold it in place and prevent irritation. Avoid hard foods until it can be repaired. Contact our offices and we can go in to repair brackets or even remove ones not necessary for your current phase of treatment.
- Lost aligner – Misplaced your clear aligners? No worries! You can skip ahead to your next aligner or go back and start using your last one! What really matters is not spending days without an aligner because teeth will begin to move backwards.
- Poking wire – A wire that’s popped out and is irritating your cheek can often be bent back into place with a little finessing. Orthodontic wax can also provide relief by creating a buffer between the wire and your mouth allowing you time to get to our offices to clip and make comfortable. Additionally, if you give our office a call, we’re able to guide you through clipping any poking wires at home.
