How to Prevent Stains After Braces: Tips for Keeping Your Smile Bright

Congratulations on getting your braces removed! You’ve officially achieved that confident, beautiful smile you’ve been working so hard for. But now that your braces are off, you might be wondering how to keep your teeth looking their best. One common concern among former braces wearers is the potential for staining or discoloration around the brackets. At Hatcher & Frey, we’re here to help you maintain a bright, healthy smile for years to come.

What Causes Stains During Orthodontic Treatment?

While braces help straighten your teeth, they can create areas for plaque to easily accumulate. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth after eating and drinking. If not properly removed, this plaque can contribute to the development of white spots on your teeth around your braces. These white spots are the result of demineralization from bacterial acids and are different than staining caused by certain food or drinks.

Tips to Prevent Stains While Wearing Braces

The best way to handle white spot lesions is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Here are some tips to keep your teeth stain–free during your orthodontic treatment:

Brush Diligently – White spot lesions cannot occur without cavity causing bacteria so it is essential to thoroughly brush your teeth after every meal using fluoride toothpaste and a soft–bristle toothbrush. Bonus points if the toothpaste is rich in calcium. Pay special attention to the areas around your brackets and under the wires. An electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head can be particularly effective at removing plaque in these hard–to–reach spots.

Floss Daily – Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and around your braces. A floss threader or a water flosser can make this task easier and more effective. We recommend using a waterpik because it is more effective than traditional floss around your braces.

Rinse Regularly – After brushing, rinse your mouth with a fluoridated or alkaline mouthwash to help wash away any bacterial acids that may want to linger around the braces.

Stick to Your Appointments – Regular check–ins with your orthodontist and family dentist are essential for maintaining oral health. Professional cleanings at your dentist can remove plaque and tartar that daily brushing and flossing might miss, reducing the risk of stains.

Consider Whitening Treatment – Whitening treatments can brighten your smile but they can also help assist in disinfecting around your braces. They are not a substitute for brushing and flossing but our custom whitening pens are a great tool to help further disinfect around your braces and keep your smile looking bright.
