Orthodontic Tips for Parents: Helping Your Child Build Healthy Habits This School Year

A new school year brings fresh routines, new challenges, and the perfect opportunity to help your child form habits that lead to a healthier smile. Whether your child is already in orthodontic treatment or just starting to explore options, the structure of the school day can play a big role in supporting consistent care. At Hatcher & Frey Orthodontics, we’re here to guide you through the essentials so your child can stay confident and on track both in class and in their journey with braces or Invisalign.

1. Create a Morning and Evening Routine

One of the best ways to encourage good oral hygiene is to incorporate it around your child’s existing daily routine. Brushing and flossing should be as routine as packing their backpack or checking their homework. Make sure your child:

  1. Brushes their teeth for at least two minutes twice a day
  2. Flosses daily with dental floss or a water flosser
  3. Uses calcium rich toothpastes and rinses with a gentle mouthwash (if age-appropriate)

If your child wears Invisalign or a retainer, ensure they also brush their appliance daily and rinse them before reinserting.

2. Prepare an Orthodontic-Friendly Lunch

School lunches can be tricky for kids with braces. Hard, sticky, or chewy foods can damage brackets and wires or slow progress. Help your child pack a lunch that’s both nutritious and treatment-friendly. Some safe, smile-approved choices include:

  • Soft fruits like bananas, applesauce, or grapes
  • Sandwiches on soft bread (cut into manageable bites)
  • Yogurt, string cheese, or soft granola bars
  • Steamed vegetables or pasta

If your child has aligners, remind them to remove them before eating and rinse afterward.

3. Pack an Oral Care Kit

Between meals and before after-school activities, your child needs to be able to clean their appliances and their teeth. A small Oral Care Kit kept in their backpack or locker can help keep them on track. Oral Care Kit should include:

  • A soft-bristle toothbrush and travel-size toothpaste
  • Dental floss
  • Orthodontic wax (for any irritation from brackets or wires)
  • Travel-size mouthwash
  • An extra aligner case (for those wearing Invisalign)

This simple kit can help your child take responsibility for their treatment while away from home.

4. Stick to Your Check-Up Schedule

It’s easy for busy families to let appointments slide during the school year, but staying on top of regular orthodontic check-ups is important to successful treatment. These visits allow us to:

  • Monitor progress
  • Make necessary adjustments
  • Spot any issues early

At Hatcher & Frey, we offer flexible scheduling options, including early morning and afternoon appointments, to make it easier for families to fit orthodontic care into the school routine.

5. Encourage Responsibility and Independence

The school year is a great time to help your child take ownership of their orthodontic journey. Talk with them about why it’s important to follow instructions, wear their appliances as directed, and communicate any concerns. Kids who feel involved in their treatment are more likely to stay committed and see great results.
