Shark Teeth for Shark Week

The greatest week of the year is finally here. That’s right–SHARK WEEK. In honor of this national holiday, we’re discussing shark teeth in children! You heard that right. Sometimes when a child’s teeth grow in, a second row of teeth may begin to emerge before the baby teeth have fallen out. This is lovingly nicknamed “shark teeth” by orthodontists because sharks have multiple rows of teeth. Here’s everything you need to know about shark teeth from the best orthodontics office in Hampton Roads!

Why does this happen?

This condition is most common between 5 and 7 years old when children are losing teeth and permanent, adult teeth are starting to emerge. If there is overcrowding and insufficient space, the new teeth will pop up behind the existing row of teeth. Genetics can also contribute to the likelihood of this, like other aspects of dental development.

There is no need to panic if/when you see shark teeth emerge; however, it may be a sign that your child could benefit from an orthodontic screening.

What should you do?

Many times, shark teeth will resolve themselves over time. A consultation with an orthodontist at Hatcher & Frey may be beneficial if a few weeks go by and there is no movement of the baby teeth.

If any of the following is true, you should call one of our offices:

  • Your child has difficulty chewing or speaking.
  • The new teeth are twisted or overcrowded.
  • The baby teeth are not budging three weeks after the shark teeth emerge.

How can we help?

Early orthodontic screenings can be extremely helpful for your child and cost-effective in the long run by helping you avoid unnecessary treatments.

At Hatcher & Frey Orthodontics, we help parents take an active role in their child’s oral development through our Smile Squad Program

Smile Squad is a free program for children, designed to guide parents through their child’s oral development.

  • We offer complimentary orthodontic screenings (including exams, digital x‑rays, and developmental discussions) and ongoing growth and guidance checks to monitor development. Although sometimes we will screen patients at younger ages, it is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontics to receive a screening for Ages 7 and Up.
  • For parents of younger patients we also offer annual age‑specific educational newsletters about what to expect with jaw and tooth development prior to getting your adult front teeth.

Led by Dr. Bill Hatcher and Dr. Scott Frey, recognized Invisalign experts with a strong track record in pediatric orthodontics, the program emphasizes early monitoring to prevent more serious, costly problems later on. If an issue is detected, our team provides age‑appropriate recommendations and seamlessly coordinates with the child’s dentist and other care providers to prioritize their oral health.
