Sleep Apnea and Your Smile: How Orthodontics Can Support Better Sleep
If you wake up tired even after what felt like a sufficient amount of sleep, you could be suffering from sleep apnea. Chronic fatigue, snoring, morning headaches, or difficulty concentrating can all be signs of sleep apnea, and your teeth may be contributing to the issue.
At Hatcher & Frey Orthodontics, we believe orthodontic care is about more than straight teeth. It’s about how the teeth, jaws, and airway work together to support your overall health including the quality of your sleep.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common form, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the airway becomes partially or fully blocked as the muscles relax at night.
Common signs and symptoms include:
- Snoring (doesn’t always have to be loud)
- Gasping or choking during sleep
- Daytime fatigue
- Morning headaches
- Brain fog or irritability
How Orthodontics Connects to Airway Health
Many people associate sleep apnea treatment with CPAP therapy, and for many adults, that’s an essential and effective solution. However, the size and position of your jaws can influence your airway. We work with your sleep physician to make sure your upper jaw, lower jaw, tongue space, and bite relationship all are in harmony with a healthy airway.
At Hatcher & Frey, every comprehensive exam includes facial analysis, jaw relationships, sleep apnea screening, and digital bite scans. When the jaws are narrow or positioned in a way that limits tongue space, it can contribute to airway restriction.
Orthodontics doesn’t “cure” sleep apnea, but in many cases, it can be part of a larger solution.
Early Sleep Apnea Intervention in Children and Teens
In growing patients, airway-focused orthodontics can be especially impactful.
Signs that may warrant evaluation include:
- Chronic mouth breathing
- A narrow upper jaw
- Early crowding
- Snoring in children
In some cases, expansion is needed to widen the upper jaw, potentially improving nasal airflow and positively influencing airway dimensions in growing patients. When addressed early, and in collaboration with sleep physicians or ENT specialists, orthodontics can support healthier development.
