What causes my teeth to stain?

Some staining is extrinsic – meaning it originates on the surface of your teeth. These kinds of stains occur due to smoking, plaque buildup, and certain foods/beverages such as berries, tomatoes, apple juice, teas, sodas and wines. Intrinsic staining, actually occurs due to issues originating inside the body or tooth – such as use of specific medications, illnesses, long term smoking, long term soda/wine/tea consumption, and aging.

How long do whitening appointments last?

What if I have sensitive teeth? Can whitening still work for me?

Sometimes tooth sensitivity can come on unexpectedly – and sometimes you come into the process knowing you have sensitive teeth. We are still able to provide quality results and a comfortable process for our patients either way. First, we recommend all patients take ibuprofen prior to coming in for their appointment. Second, we will take every precaution by using a desensitizing gel around your teeth and gums. Third, if you begin to experience sensitivity during your session, we are able to adjust both the intensity level of the UV light, as well as the duration of your treatment.

Can I eat/drink immediately after getting my teeth whitened?

We strongly advise you to only drink clear liquids and “white” non-staining foods for 48 hours post-whitening treatment. This means avoiding coffee, wine, sodas, teas, tomato-based sauces, staining fruit, pizza, etc. Basically, if you can drop it on a white shirt and it leaves a stain – you shouldn’t be eating/or drinking it immediately following treatment.

What if I experience tooth sensitivity post-whitening treatment?

If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity after your treatment, we recommend using Ibuprofren in combination with other sensitivity-controlling approaches such as eating lukewarm foods and drinking lukewarm beverages (vs. too cold or too hot) for a few days. We also recommend using a toothpaste such as Sensodyne for the week following your treatment.

Can I finance teeth whitening through Hatcher & Frey Orthodontics?
