Orthodontic treatment should not drag on for years. Longer treatment times make it difficult for patients to stay motivated, and the presence of fixed appliances in the mouth for extended periods can increase the strain placed on your teeth and gums due to increased plaque retention. Thus, orthodontic treatment should be planned and executed to be as efficient as possible.
Ultimately, the complexity of your case and your individual biology are the limiting factors in treatment; however, recent advancements in orthodontic technology have allowed orthodontists to enhance the biology of tooth movement and make the process healthier and more comfortable. As a byproduct of better biology, we are also able to move teeth twice as fast, so you can start smiling in half the time! Amazingly, all this can be accomplished with quick, at-home treatments using specialized, hands-free devices that we will discuss at length in this post.
Orthodontic treatment is a biologic process that involves changes to the structure and form of your jaws, and the bone and tissue surrounding your teeth. Thus, cellular pathways responsible for bone and tissue healing play a definitive role in achieving a favorable treatment response. The use of light, physiologically responsible forces in treatment allow for optimal functioning of these cellular pathways, but in the past orthodontists had no means of boosting biology without invasive surgical procedures. Fortunately, technology that has previously been in use for decades to treat numerous conditions from osteoporosis to healing broken bones is now being applied to orthodontic treatment, allowing us to safely enhance the cellular response. Short, daily treatment sessions, lasting just 10-20 mins, using these hands-free devices in combination with either braces or Invisalign, is enough to boost’s your body’s response to orthodontic treatment and has several advantages, including:
We have recognized the tremendous value of these therapies in providing better care for our patients. This is especially true for adult patients, whose biology has slowed down, and one reason why we accelerate all comprehensive adult orthodontic treatment in our office. Dr. Frey is a leading authority on accelerated orthodontics, and we are the most experienced provider of enhanced orthodontic technology in the region. With these tools we can provide patients with our signature smiles in as little as 5 months.
OrthoPulse® is an FDA-cleared medical device that uses low levels of light energy to stimulate the bone surrounding the roots of your teeth, increasing comfort and allowing your teeth to move twice as fast. Our office was a part of an exclusive group of only 40 orthodontists who participated in the clinical trial of this device. LED lights in the mouthpiece of the device, generate safe, near infrared and visible red wavelengths of light. As the low levels of light energy are absorbed, cellular metabolism and many important physiological signaling pathways are enhanced, thereby accelerating tooth movement and increasing healing. The soothing energy of the LED lights can be felt as a gentle warmth on your teeth and gums during treatment. OrthoPulse® is hands-free and one self-treatment session of 10-minutes per day, done at-home or anywhere, is typically all that is required to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement and make treatment more comfortable. Your OrthoPulse® device comes in a box complete with instructions, a charging case, and USB power cord. To use the OrthoPulse® after charging, wake the OrthoPulse by picking it up from the charging case. The status light will turn green indicating it is ready for use. An amber status indicates that the battery level is too low for a treatment. A status light guide is available on the bottom of the charging case in case you have questions. To begin treatment, simply place the device in your mouth around your existing orthodontic appliances or Invisalign, centering it over your top teeth. Bite down gently on the mouthpiece; the device will beep twice and the status light will turn blue indicating the start of treatment. Treatment will end automatically after 5mins and the device will start beeping and the blue status light will start to blink. Now flip the device and repeat the process to treat the lower teeth. Before returning the OrthoPulse® to it’s charging case, you may gently rinse the device under lukewarm water or disinfect it with a cleansing wipe. That is all it takes to light up your smile in half the time.
AcceleDent® Aura is one of only two FDA-cleared medical devices for the acceleration of tooth movement. Using gentle micropulses, called SoftPulse Technology,® Acceledent® increases the rate of bone remodeling, accelerating tooth movement and allowing teeth to move up to 50% faster.
The patented SoftPulse Technology® is extremely gentle and generates around 8x less force than you would experience with a power toothbrush. These micro-pulses also help make your orthodontic treatment more comfortable.
Acceledent® treatments are very straightforward, and only take 20 minutes each day. The device is hands-free so many patients use it while performing other tasks like watching TV. The device itself comes in a handy travel case to keep components safe and secure. Inside the case you will find a USB extension cable and power adaptor for charging the device just like you would with your phone, a detachable mouthpiece that is sized to fit your teeth, and a small, lightweight activator which generates the gentle micropulses. To use the Acceledent,® start by making sure the device is charged and the mouthpiece is securely attached to the activator. Simply insert the mouthpiece between your teeth with your existing orthodontic appliances or Invisalign in place, and bite down normally. Once you press the start button on the activator you will begin to feel the soothing vibrations and the device will shut off automatically after the 20 minute treatment is complete. Although only once daily use is recommended, we also encourage patients to use the Acceledent® as needed to address any discomfort that may arise during treatment.

Missing just one treatment can be ok, but if this happens frequently you will not see the same results
No and this may actually have the opposite effect. You should only use them more than once per day to address discomfort or as recommended by your doctor.
With Accelerated treatment, most cases can be completed in less than a year. Ultimately, the complexity of treatment and your biology is the limiting factor.
There are software limitations implemented by the companies to prevent use between patients.
Absolutely. The smart science in these devices is based on clinically proven and safe technology that has been in use in medicine for over 60 years.
Not Really. With accelerated Invisalign, you may notice that teeth may become slightly wiggly when you are not wearing your aligners. This is due to faster movement and will subside after treatment.
